Microscopy for Life Sciences - Cryo-Microscopy and Impact of Applied Physics on Optical Techniques
Co-organized with ZEISS
Chair: Luciana DINI, Sapienza University of Rome

Today, microscopes are well-known and widely spread in almost every biological laboratory, together with laser scanning microscopes and super-resolution microscopes, which are standard tools to study samples in 3D and with high resolution.

In this symposium we will explore how to combine multiple perspectives of a sample across scales, different image modalities and analytical approaches and finally answer the Scientific Questions.

We will dive into the most innovative techniques: first, Lattice Lightsheet and Lattice SIM bring new level of information on living samples, thanks to Physics applied to Optics, then Cryo-Microscopy opens new perspectives on samples in their native state in a full multiscale investigation from Cryo-Confocal down to Cryo-EM’s molecular scale and, eventually, X-ray microscopes allow to image large objects like bones and plants in 3D without sectioning.

Each imaging system has its strengths and gives access to information that was hidden before. As everybody knows, biological samples can be as heterogenous as life itself: whole organisms must be investigated in its holistic nature as well as in its components. The challenge for the scientist is to image and to visualize huge organisms to get an impression of the entire subject as well as gaining information in a high depth of detail. Getting an overview of the morphology is highly interesting as the behavior of cells which is facilitated by protein interactions.

The symposium is part of the Symposia
